01/05/2025 Christina Critiques Movies

Well, well, well. Hello to you AND 2025. I have some blooooody movies for you this week and a few Christmas movies because why not, right?

Next week, I get back to book reviews but will continue with one movie review a week. I can’t have riots.

Enjoy the carnage this week!

TOKYO GORE POLICE (2008)

Written and directed by: Yoshihiro Nishimura

Run time: 1 hour, 50 mins

Rated: MA

Free: Tubi

Synopsis: A young girl must track down the key holders or engineers, to rid the city of the scum. But sometimes to get the closest, you must become what you hunt.

Pros: the constant limb severing.

Cons: I mean, it’s insane…

Most memorable scene: the bottle to the face and the blow after.

Thoughts: WTF? That should be my whole review. This one though, actually has a story and sticks with it. I will CONTENT WARNING: self-harm. But this one is absolutely bananas and an oddly great time. (And the cinematography is stunning!)

Rating: 9.5/10

SILENT NIGHT (2012)

Written: Jayson Rothwell

Directed: Steven C. Miller

Run time: 1 hour, 34 mins

Rated: R

Free: Tubi

Synopsis: A town and its residents are being hunted by a disgruntled Santa and they better hope they’ve been nice.

Pros: the constant kills

Cons: the last 5 minutes felt like a time filler

Most memorable scene: any scene with Donal Logue

Thoughts: I lost count of the kills there were so many. The scenes where I thought I had finally figured it out but didn’t, were great! It keeps the viewer guessing and in suspense. A bit cheesy and a bit over the top but still a fun time.

Rating: 8.5/10

BLACK CHRISTMAS (1974)

Written: Roy Moore

Directed: Bob Clark

Run time: 1 hour, 38 mins

Rated: R

Free: Tubi

Synopsis: A group of sorority sisters must track down one of their missing sisters while staying alive themselves and answering the phone.

Pros: the killer

Cons: a bit too fast, viewer forgets all the characters at times

Most memorable scene: the unicorn

Thoughts: I loved the feel of claustrophobia the movie gave without intending to. The acting was great, if not a bit cheesy at times. I wish it was longer to slow the pace down a bit and focus on each character a bit more. But I loved it and the killer POV shots were amazing.

Rating: 8/10
