12-8-24 - Christina Critiques Movies

There are so many great movies this week, let’s skip the banter, grab some popcorn, and take a gander at some classics.

Enjoy!

STAGE FRIGHT (1987)

Written by: Lew Cooper and Sheila Goldberg

Directed by: Michele Soari

Synopsis: A sex-crazed director believes he has a new vision with his rag tag cast and crew. But little are they prepared when one by one they will have their own parts tested by a killer.

Campy and blood soaked is the only way to describe this insanity filled romp from the 80s. I won’t pretend there aren’t eye rolling moments because there are but they are laugh causing too. It’s graphic in its violence so many horror fans will definitely appreciate the absurdity AND the gore.

7.5/10.

HAUNT (2019)

Written/Directed by: Scott Beck and Bryan Woods

Let’s start with my only complaint . At the beginnning of the movie, it states that they are in Carbondale, IL. It’s. A. Lie. I know Carbondale, or the dirty ‘Dale as many Southern Illinoisans call it. Point taken away for their sinful lies!

Synopsis: Haunted warehouse, college kids, blood. But the college kids aren’t as stupid as they normally are. (So the point they lost in their shameful lie of filming shall be rewarded back.)

It just worked. You would think the haunted house/Hell House LLC vibe had been overplayed but it wasn’t the feel of this one. It had a great production design, the characters (and dialogue) felt authentic, and the kills were great. All in all, it was a fun, gory film.

A definite recommend. 9/10

JASON LIVES (1986)

Written by: Tom McLaughlin, Victor Miller, Sean S. Cunningham

Directed: Tom McLaughlin

Synopsis: Jason comes back.

This movie was so much fun! Imagine if the absurdity if ARMY OF DARKNESS actually worked - it’s JASON LIVES. Cornball scenes that do not belong but defuse what should be tension, 4th wall breaking, dumb as hell kills - all equal a recipe for hilarity. Some of the dialogue was so bad you roll your eyes and cackle at the same time.

It’s absolute brain rot of a movie and I couldn’t love it more.

Banger. 9/10

HAPPY DEATH DAY (2017)

Written by: Scott Lobdell

Directed by: Christopher Landon

Synopsis: A college sorority girl must figure out her killer of suffer the day all over a gain. Everyone is a suspect and she can’t seem to figure it out.

I LOVED GROUNDHOG DAY! Then add in a slasher plot line AND sprinkle in a meet cute - please. Movie toe tag me, I’m done. Even knowing the loose premise of GROUNDHOG DAY, it’s fresh and creative enough you don’t care. You want to figure it out right along with her and the way the clues click together chef’s kiss.

“Who is Bill Murray?” - 9.5/10

EDEN LAKE (2008)

Written and directed by: James Watkins

Synopsis: A couple go away for the weekend to camp at a beautiful, tranquil lake… until it turns into a race for survival after a group of teens play cat and mouse.

Nooooooooope. Every second of the last 2/3 made me tense up so much my jaw and shoulders hurt. The first 1/3 was slow and a bit of a slog but once it kicks off you will want to hold your breath until the end. I just felt depressed, pissed, and hopeless. Don’t watch this if you are in a good mood, you will get wrecked.

I’m going to go be hopeless and fear teenagers in the corner.

Make sure to take your medication before this one. 9/10.
