Today's breakdown is for the audiobook of "Dreamcatcher" by Stephen King:
Having seen the film version (which did an excellent portrayal I must say) a dozen times and loving it, I decided to visit this one that had piqued my interest in high school but like many of his stories a different one caught me first and it went to the wayside. Picking it up years later, I couldn't be more pleased. I'd definitely put Duddits up there as most lovable King characters alongside the likes of Rose McClendon and John Coffey. Between his extraordinary shining ability and adoration for Scooby-Doo, I almost wish I didn't see the movie first in this case but the actor did so well that it only enhanced my experience in the book nonetheless. As always, you have to enjoy Stephen's nod to some of his other tales and I was giddy about the ones found in this one. I felt like SK wrote this in part just to have a lot of fart jokes to tell but it at least served the journey, still I could've done without it so often. I also think knowing what the game of cribbage is would've made some parts matter more. I also much preferred the movie outcome of the reservoir scene over the book version which felt anticlimactic for me. None of these minor complaints took anything away and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I still say the coming-of-age of this one is my favorite one told by the author. And how creepy were those lines about amputees having feeling in limbs that aren't there... I cannot stop thinking about them.
The narration by Jeffrey DeMunn was executed with perfection. I listened to a majority of this during a snowstorm and was transported there inside my imagination, braving the invasion and almost seeing the line along with Duds.
5/5 stars.
