Happiest of Sundays, my friends! Today is possibly the weirdest mix of reviews yet and I love it! We are going to spend some quality time with Gotrek and Felix, get disciplined, read through some slush stories, and battle a bunch of bad guys.

Let’s get crazy and get into them!

THE CITY OF THE DAMNED (Gotrek and Felix #14)

By David Guymer

Ugggggh. This series has hit such a wall for me, and I hate that so much. I loved the first twelve so much that I had to buy the physical as well as having the audio and eBooks. But the past two… woof.

In this installment, Gotrek and Felix travel two hundred years in the past to battle a dark entity. There are skaven and voices of the dead.

There are almost no redeeming qualities to this book. It is all over the place, the time shifting doesn’t really make sense, the characters are flat (even Felix and Gotrek are boring and flat), the fight scenes readers are used to are mediocre at best.

Can you tell I didn’t like this one?

I would suggest stopping at issue 12, I know I should have. But I didn’t because I’m a masochist. One day I will learn.

I only would recommend for the completists among us.

A disappointing 3/5.

THE LORDS OF DISCIPLINE

By Pat Conroy

I do not say this lightly, but this may be the best book I have read in my 42 years on this planet.

Will McLean is a fish out of water in beautiful, fancy smancy Charleston, South Carolina. When he is accepted into The Institute, he learns what being a whole man in the with military discipline means, cruelty, loyalty, friendship, hazing, fear, loneliness and more. With his three best friends and roommates, Tradd, Mark, and Pig, they will spend the next four years becoming “whole men”.

Conroy ruined my heart. There is a death in here that knocked out Williem from [redacted]. The cruelty seen in some of these characters hurt my heart just to read. Then there was beauty in friendship and love … then there wasn’t. What Conroy does with forcing the reader to not only be complacent in the cruelty but suffer as well, is astounding.

The commentary is something that stands out as well; classism, segregation, hazing vs. torture, leadership, forced respect, all culminates in disturbing and upsetting ways.

Oink. Oink.

A DOUBLE HIGHLY RECOMMEND 10/5.

SLUSH PILE

By Jason Nickey

Is there any short story this guy can’t write? The answer is there is no limit. Let’s just jump into the stories.

Group Therapy - Four traumatized found friends each learn a bloody lesson in letting go.

Rocks - Billy isn’t great with peer pressure from his friends, Jack and Clay, but one game puts all of them in Death’s sights.

The End of the Line - If your Tinder date is annoying, don’t dine and dash. At least stay and pay. (This has the feel of Midnight Meat Train by Clive Barker.)

An Unexpected Visitor - Step 1: Don’t think mechanics are hot. Step 2: Don’t give them your number. Step 3: Try to stay alive.

#bookrecs - Please don’t kidnap me if I give you a bad review. #thanks #worstkidnapvictim #hashtag

Sins of the Father - Stevie is a bullied. One day he meets a man on a log that not only holds a secret but a recipe for revenge.

West Texas Glory Hole - Glory holes can suck… you dry.

I Couldn’t Do It - Emotional damage. That’s it. That’s the review for this one.

Bystander Apathy - What happens when you go out for groceries and witness a heinous act but can’t do anything about it?

Hickory Dickory Dock - Be nice to admirers who give you gifts, or your time may run out.

Amphetamines and Smegma - Whores. Truckers. Drugs. Poop. That’s enough to entice you to read this one.

Smashed. Wrecked... Gone… - Phil and Carol have the house to themselves not that the kids are gone. On the night Phil is honored for world, the ride home is anything but celebratory.

Standouts were: An Unexpected Visitor, #bookrecs, I Couldn’t Do It, Amphetamines and Smegma, and Smashed. Wrecked... Gone…

I could see a few of these stories being up for a Splatter Award next year. Hell, maybe even the whole collection.

A DOUBLE HIGHLY RECOMMEND 10/5.

JUSTICE LEAGUE VS. GODZILLA VS. KONG

By Brian Buccellato and Christian Duce

Full transparency, I thought this was a joke graphic novel. I mean, just add in the kitchen sink why don’t you? I was wrong. My crow was delicious (I added spices, so it wasn’t so bland.)

The Legion of Doom want to destroy the Justice League, a tale as old as time, eh? But it gets a little more dangerous when Toyman takes the red gem and wishes for some gargantuan assistance on taking down the do-gooders. But as with everything in life, it doesn’t go as planned. Can the Justice League prevail!?

I can’t lie, this was entertaining as hell. Even for someone who really knows nothing of Godzilla or Kong minus the normal scuttlebutt, I still was able to keep up and see where the story line was going. The rest of the characters, both Justice League and The Legion of Doom were accessible to me as well. I’m not knowledgeable with many of the characters (like Toyman, seems like a boring character but he was very entertaining in this).

A HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND from this crow eating woman. 5/5.
