8-27-2024 Besonen Breakdowns

Today's breakdown is for "Lucy" by Kristopher Rufty:

Having been my first read by Rufty, I cannot compare it to his other work obviously, but I found the Horror bits really well written. Often, he is crowned as a master of the Slasher genre, so I chose this one because I felt that it may have been a little out of the author's comfort zone and I wanted to see how well it would be handled. Kristopher did a hell of a job with the great violence descriptors, yes, but he also made me feel emotions on a deeper level because of the pains and fears and triumphs explored through the eyes of an abused dog. I felt apathetic towards the humans' sufferings, yet the animal angle made me care a lot more because of the trauma it caused a being of innocence. When Lucy hurt, I did too and I was ready for her bloody revenge, which was executed delightfully. Unlike Cujo, she didn't need rabies to get vicious, Lucy is just one bad bitch! The villains were nicely put together too, a bit iconic in their own right, I could definitely see this book on screen in my mind.

4/5 stars.
