9-22-24 Christina Critiques

Only two more weeks of September and two more weeks in Graphic Novel September. Don’t fear, there is still more to check out until then.

Let’s hang out with dark, ancient entities, deal with a hex or four, hug a cuddly bunny, and find out the truth about Godzilla.

BRYNMORE

By Steve Niles and Damien Worm

Mark is looking to make a change or two after his divorce. His wife hates him, daughter doesn’t want to talk to him so why not remodel an old, abandoned church. What could possibly go wrong?

A lot. Unfortunately, this was a miss. The premise was super interesting but it moved WAY too fast. The characters are flat because we don’t know enough to relate to them, the lore doesn’t really make any sense, and the dialogue is off. If this had been a longer series with more explanations, it would have been amazing. But as is, it just fell flat.

3/5.

HEXES

By Simon Birks

Four comics in one, Birks gives us a sampling collection.

The Boy Who Comes Closer is about a child who meets a man on a winter day when his mother isn’t paying attention to him and must discover why he was chosen.

Walking Nightmare follows Ben and his journey through life as he chases down whatever took his hair when he was a child. Can he stop it from doing it to others?

Midnight Oil is about one Mother’s inability to deal with a death that she blames herself for. When an odd messenger shows up, she must decide if it’s time to move on.

101 finds Lee trying to make a phone call but can’t seem to find one in this apartment building until a kindly old man helps him but also tells him a story that is unbelievable.

The art is interesting but the stories all fall flat. One story introduces a character but we never find out more about her, which is really confusing.

3/5.

GODZILLA AWAKENING

By Greg and Max Borenstein

I don’t know much about Godzilla. I knew he was big and could kill a lot of people at one time and roared. That’s about the gist of my knowledge but finding out how he gets resurrected was pretty doggone neat.

We see how the bombing of Hiroshima contributed to the impending destruction that Godzilla would cause. It’s interesting because if one looks at it from the social commentary lenses, so much can be unearthed (pun 100% intended). This comic takes the reader all over the globe while connecting characters in different timelines.

Definitely a place to begin learning about the lore of Godzilla for those like me.

A HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND 5/5.

STABBITY BUNNY

By Richard Rivera

Grace is kidnapped and Amanda, her Mother, knows why. A family secret she has tried to bury deep in the family vault has come back to haunt her and all of those close to her. How can a stuffed bunny rabbit help protect her and Grace?

I have to say the artwork and characters are what stood out in this graphic novel. The tension the characters and the plot instill makes you want to turn the page while also worrying about what will come next.

I’m not going to give too much away because this is a fun one that you can read in one sitting. It’s also heavy on the gore so that should scratch that itch for many.

A definite recommend 4/5.
