9-8-24 Christina Critiques

Friends! We are on week 2 of graphic novel extravaganza month! Remember, each of these can be found on Hoopla, a free resource through your library.

Let’s get into our supervillain era, ride the range, hunt some ghosts, and hang out with serial killers.

WANTED Issues #1-6

By Mark Millar

(Thank you to Carver Pike for the recommendation.)

Wesley Gibson is having a pretty shitty life. His dad walked out on him when he was eighteen months old, his girlfriend is banging his best friend, and his job is pure hell. What’s even worse, the dad that walked out on him… he has some secrets that have come up and Wesley is knee deep in more than vagina. Supervillains aren’t real… right?

What a clever, well told graphic novel! I had a blast from the first cell to the last. It is highly offensive, and I needed that after reading so many that aren’t. Also, Wesley looks a lot like Eminem, and one looks a bit like Tommy Lee Jones. It just adds to it, promise. Plot twist after plot twist this is one graphic novel you will not be able to put down.

A HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND 5/5.

RED RANGE

By Joe R. Lansdale and Sam Glanzman

Rufus has been through seeing those around him killed by the KKK as well as others that were unable to stand up for themselves surrounded by a dozen blood thirsty killers. When Rufus saves a young boy from certain death, they must fight not only other killers but killers of a whole different world.

First, this is not easy to read. The artistry is difficult to deal with as it is graphic as hell. The first panel will turn your stomach so definitely proceed with caution. Add to that the language of the time and you have a recipe for pure discomfort.

Now all of that known, this is a well written and fleshed out graphic novel. In eighty-eight pages, you get such a sense of the world that Lansdale has woven. I also want to be 100% transparent, it gets weird in the last third of the graphic novel. But after the oppressive language, characters, and art it’s an odd, welcomed reprieve.

A HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND 5/5.

THE TORMENTED Issue 1-5

By Chuck Austen and Lee Loughridge

Ryan Austerholle has lost his job. Not to worry Brad has a great idea as a producer and director, to have a ghost hunting show. Now the only problem is, Ryan has a bit of history with said ghost hunting as in his parents were famous for it and he also sees ghosts. (Wait until you meet his therapist). But once the gang starts ghost hunting, it will end up being life or death for all of them. Will anyone make it out alive?

If I don’t get more in this series, I may scream. Everything was great. The characters (living and dead) were so fleshed out (no pun intended), the scares and gasp moments were there, and the anticipation was at an all-time high. I’m so impressed by this short series and truly do hope there is more to come.

A HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND of all five issues. 5/5.

NAILBITER THE COMPENDIUM

Joshua Williamson

(Thank you to Mike Ennenbach for the recommendation.)

What happens to a town that seemingly breeds serial killers? Say, I don’t know like sixteen or so? Well, this 750+ page behemoth will tell you that and more.

Edward Charles Warren has a quirk about people and nails… to the point he can’t seem to control himself most times. When he comes back to town, he has a very cold greeting and even worse, when bodies start showing up. Are the other serial killers back? Why is there a suspense terrorist interrogator in the small town? Why does the Sheriff of the town act so oddly towards The Nailbiter and resident goth chick?

I think I’m on a serial killer kick at the moment because this graphic novel gave me everything I wanted. It has relationships, suspense, gore, fear, a bunch of scares, more gore, family secrets, supernatural elements, EVERYTHING! I did end NAILBITER with my pout lips in full activation mode. It kicks you in the feels and I wasn’t ready.

A DOUBLE HIGHLY RECOMMEND 10/5.
