“Don't just fear what you're hiding from, fear what you're hiding with. Cassie's night of babysitting goes to hell when bombs explode in the distance, planes fly overhead at low altitudes, and alerts on her phone tell her to seek shelter. Luckily, the boy she babysits tells her his father has a bunker in the yard. When they make their way to this underground shelter, they soon discover they aren't alone. Something is living in the bunker, lurking in the walls, and it's hungry. What started as a simple night of babysitting, will descend into a psychological and claustrophobic nightmare Cassie couldn't have prepared for.”
Today's review: Bunker Dogs by Gage Greenwood
Going into this book I had high expectations because I am such a big fan of Winter's Myths and its sequel, Winter's Legacy. I did myself a disservice doing so because this book is a completely different vibe. I felt let down after finishing it because it wasn't Winter's Myths 3 (which I am highly anticipating!).
So, I did what any proper fan would do and I reread to give it a chance to be what it was supposed to be and not what I wanted it to be. And I loved it!
The threads of grief and depression that Gage is so apt at weaving are ever present in this unique take of a vampiric tale. It's not even about vampires, not really. It is about internal struggle, heavy emotions, and personal identity. Who is Cassie? And who does she want to be?
No spoilers but the White Wolf is a whole other dimension of internal struggle, heavy emotion, and identity. Gage recently shared some backstory to this character which I found haunting and enlightening. He is an expert at personifying grief and I am in awe of this particular skill.
I was thrilled, even during the first read through, about the Easter Eggs from the Winter's Myths universe that Gage hid within this story. The second time, they hit even harder.
All in all, this is a layered story of grief and self-exploration that may require multiple reads to even catch everything. And I strongly advise you to dive in with no expectations...
