Brawl Review: Gollitok by Andrew Najberg

I know I know, the brawl voting has already started. I am finishing the last two books on my list that I need to read, and feel confident I will have them finished before their bracket!

I will continue to post my reviews of all 32 titles until I am done. And then I will move on to non-brawl reviews!

Which brings me to today's review: Gollitok by Andrew Najberg

"In a post-nuclear Eastern Europe, Hammel E Varka departs for a remote island to join a survey team cataloguing the abandoned Gollitok prison in the hopes that he will redeem his family’s tarnished reputation. After the passage across the strait leaves a team member injured, Varka quickly realizes that this survey is far from routine and that what he thought he knew about the island was a cover for more horrifying truths. As his team presses deeper into the decaying facility, hidden agendas splinter the team, and they find themselves beset with dangers beyond their worst nightmares."

This was my first book by Najberg, and my good goddess it will not be my last. It hit all the boxes for me: post-apocalyptic, untrustworthy narrator, character development, dystopian, good pacing, creepy prison island, mutated murder seagulls, you know... the usual.

I was drawn in by Varka's story, and was rooting for him the whole way through. I was on the fence about a few of the other characters, and ended up liking some I thought I didn't and also ended up not liking some I thought I was supposed to.

No spoilers from me, as you know, so here comes the ambiguous recommendation:

It's thrilling, suspenseful, violent, and unhinged.

A legit question I asked myself multiple times while reading: "Is the lighthouse really a lighthouse?" the follow up conversation with myself was: "If it's not a lighthouse, then what is it? Is it a monster? Is it alive? No, that's crazy, right? but, Is it? Is that crazy?"

I could go on, but then you might think that I am crazy. I mean, you might think I'm crazy, anyway. Hahaha. So, go, read it for yourself... And then you can be more informed in your judgement of my sanity. At least in regard to my reaction of Gollitok!
