Welcome back to another Weird Wednesday. But, for the next few months, it’s a different kind of weird. Since I’ve made a personal goal to read all 32 books that made it into this year’s Books of Horror Indie Brawl, instead of posting haunted locations articles, I am going to be posting my reviews of each book until I have finished them all!
Today's review is for Lovely, Dark & Deep by Megan Stockton.
"Every year, Six Mile Island has a seasonal shutdown for serious weather. This year, the forecast is calling for the storm of a century, so most of the population has agreed to an evacuation order to more safely ride out the storm on the mainland. When a child goes missing on the cusp of the oceanic storm, a select few inhabitants are left behind to preform a frantic search. Little do they know that the ocean is bringing more than a storm to Six Mile... An ancient species hungers from the sea."
Megan weaves a bleak and suspenseful story told from multiple POVs. The tone is set from the beggining with tension building on each page. Chapter by chapter I slid closer to the edge of my seat, ready to jump into the story to help the characters survive.
Many questions are raised: Who's body has washed to shore? How bad is this storm going to be? Who took Barbora's baby?
As we learn more about the inhabitants of the island, we are presented with more questions. A feeling of dread follows the characters as they try to stay safe from the storm... and then it amplifies to something more akin to terror as they try to stay safe from... something else.
All is revealed in a beautifully written, albeit ambiguous, ending. It might seem like a conundrum, but that is the beauty of Megan's talent. This story hit me hard. I became invested in the characters and felt each loss heavily in my heart.
Will anyone survive the storm of the century? Find out for yourself.
