Rachel Schommer Reviews: 1.20.25

It only feels right to come back from our 2-month break with the author who really cemented my love for independent horror, Mr. Daniel J. Volpe. This title also feels very fitting for a day like today.

ONLY PSYCHOS by Daniel J. Volpe

1. This was the perfect winter read! I’m a mood reader who finds reading for seasons/situations to be extremely fun because it makes the reading experience feel more immersive. While I wasn’t in the midst of a snowstorm when I devoured this novella, it was extremely cold. I was craving all the ‘shut in’ winter vibes to go along with the temperature and Only Psychos delivered, since it takes place in the middle of a duo of winter storms.

2. Volpe did what Volpe does and grossed me TF out. But not without substance. There are both plot and characters you care about, with a healthy dose of gross. I love how DJV can make me cringe and feel disgusted while simultaneously making me feel emotions, like sympathy, about the same situation.

3. There’s one hell of a plot twist that I absolutely didn’t see coming, holy schnikes! I’ll be honest that I am not always one to sniff out the twist anyway, but this felt completely out of left field, even for those people who may have more of a talent for anticipating plot twists.

4. This was an action-packed quick read with the paperback coming in at 124 pages. Easy to crack out in one sitting, so if you’re looking for something to get you through the doldrums of winter, I couldn’t recommend this novella more.
