Rachel Schommer Reviews: 10.21.24

You know that feeling of cracking into a new anthology and seeing 11 individual stories you can't wait to dive into, but also knowing that at least 1/3 of them aren't going to be your cup of tea? Well, that's not the case with this week's review!

CAMP SLASHER LAKE: VOLUME 3 by D.W. Hitz, Eric Butler, M Ennenbach, RJ Roles, et al.

1. I. Am. Shook. This is, hands down, the best anthology I remember reading in…well, ever. Seriously, every single story was an absolute banger and I have no criticism, which is saying a lot when there are 11 stories!

2. As the title suggests, this anthology is full of short slasher stories, but none of the 11 fall prey to the standard slasher tropes, I was ridiculously impressed with how creative each plot was AND how creative many of the kills were. I’ve said it before, and I’m sure I’ll say it again, but I love a slasher; even one that follows the standard formula (Scream fans, you get me). I can’t get over how much this anthology broke the mold when it comes to slasher villains and plots.

3. I loved each story, but I’m going to highlight just a few:

              - Honeymarrow by MJ Mars – in this story we follow an archaeological dig that goes horribly wrong. I loved the characters in this one as well as the lore that it brings into play. When locals warn against a location, perhaps there’s a reason to heed their warning.

              - Old Bones by Megan Stockton – well, this one would make a hell of a movie! Megan really brings the plot to life with her writing. In true Stockton fashion, there are some hilarious moments, biting one-liners that I’ve found to be a hallmark of her writing and one of my favorite things about her stories.

              - Baptismal Waters by Angel Van Atta – this one is told from 2 timelines and in 2 distinctive perspectives. The opening is brutal, emotional, and unique. I loved how Van Atta didn’t hold anything back in showing the lengths some will go to in order to get the family they’ve always dreamed of. Man, I wish this wasn’t something I could actually see being ripped from the headlines.

Couldn't recommend this more!
