Rachel Schommer Reviews: 2.17.25

In the last 5 days we've gotten 10+ inches of snow where I live, so I wanted to dive into a wintery snowy story, and this week's review is that. It was exactly what I was craving and I flew through this book.

THE WINTER PEOPLE by Jennifer McMahon

1. This novel was super creepy! McMahon did an awesome job of creating a lingering sense of dread that stuck with me throughout the entire read.

2. I’d categorize this as indigenous folk horror with a sort of zombie/vampire mix. There’s a lot of emotion – loss, fear, and grief mainly. I’d be willing to bet that anyone who has ever lost a loved one can relate to the whole ‘one more day’ train of thought. Whether or not you’d bring someone back if you could, you’ve likely at least thought about what you’d do if you had a little more time. This novel warns ‘be careful what you wish for’. If you’re not in a space to read about certain types of loss, I’d recommend checking the CWs before diving into this one - I could see it being a little too much for people who have grief trauma.

3. There are multiple timelines as well as many POVs that converge to answer all questions at the end, leaving no loose ends…but maybe a slight cliff-hanger. Admittedly, I don’t typically love a multi-timeline read, or a read with a lot of characters as I find it very easy to muddle the storylines, but this was not an issue at all in this book. Everything was extremely clear – whose POV it was, what the time was, and how the pieces all fit together.

Highly Recommend!
