Rachel Schommer Reviews: 7.22.24

I'm back with another dark and depressing recommendation for you! I know my reviews have been heavy lately, but that's what has been feeling right for me. You know how it is!

ASYLUM DAUGHTER by Natasha Sinclair

1. I love Natasha’s writing style. She had me hooked from the very first words of hers that I read in the Books of Horror Community Anthology. I am a sucker for a darkly psychological storyline and she consistently delivers in the most beautiful way. Natasha knows pain and because of that she writes it poetically.

2. Don’t let the beauty of her writing style fool you, this book has some very dark, somewhat taboo elements, so I’d recommend checking the CWs for this one if you have any content you try to avoid. Although, I will say if you could watch or read GoT,  you should be fine with all the subject matter in this story.

3. So much of this one hit hard, but one thing that stuck with me is how you never really know how close evil is to you…in multiple ways. It’s also always creepy to me when someone’s past comes back for them, it’s like no matter what you do, or how much you change/prepare/etc. there are certain things you cannot escape, which is utterly terrifying. Especially when that thing you can’t escape is someone else’s psychopathy.

4. The ending. Oh, the ending. This was another one I had to put down and then just sit with for a few minutes while I tried to gather my thoughts.

Highly Recommend this (and anything else by Natasha Sinclair).
