Eeek! We're coming into spooky season where it's everything haunted, slasher, possession and the like, so I thought I'd kick the season off right.
THE HAUNTING OF ELENA VERA by Steven Pajak
1. It should come as no surprise to anyone who has read my reviews that I love a book with strong female characters and this has that in droves. The storyline centers on Elena, the main character, but also heavily spotlights her 2 friends who won’t back down when it comes to keeping Elena safe. The focus is as much on their relationships with each other as it is about the haunting; this was a heartwarming opposition to the sinister evil lurking in the closet. If I’m ever experiencing possession, I only hope I have at least one person in my corner the way Elena does. The author is male and for anyone saying men cannot write female characters, Pajak is coming to prove you wrong. 😊
2. Slow burns are not my bag - especially lately. So, I appreciated that the opening scene in this book is instant action. It starts out immediately creepy and continues to be creepy throughout its entirety.
3. Felt like an easy read to me, which is a great thing! I could see this being appropriate for young adult or mature older kids (12+) if they’re into horror. I mean, I would have eaten this up at that age.
4. Loved the Latinx representation!
