Sonja Ska Reviews: 11/7/2024

TW/CW: Mental health issues, Death, Violence, Gore

The way I didn’t think I was going to read this because I wasn’t interested in the premise and then got so caught up I couldn’t put it down is a plot twist I wasn’t expecting.

Mason Coil really decided to pull the most unsettling aspects of horror, science fiction, and psychological thrillers and blend them together to create a creepy AI gone wrong nightmare. Little time is spent on set-up, but it’s just enough to leave you feeling on edge, uncomfortably looking in on a broken marriage and secrets that linger in the background like unnamed characters.

The unease grows along with the tension, mainly in the form of William - a horrific AI creation that really doesn’t bother hiding its disdain for humanity - and once the first drop of blood spills, satisfying deaths follow. Mixed into the suspense and violence, though, are well-developed characters with motivations that help fill out this punchy little book with depth and a plot that will genuinely leave you questioning your stance on what it means to be human.

At first, I wasn’t completely sold on calling this a haunted house or possession story, but definitions change as authors challenge them, so I can see how this can be a clever and fun way to add a breath of new life into old favorites. If you’re someone like me and think you’re not interested in articulating intelligence fusing with supernatural terrors, I’d strongly urge you to make an exception.

Perfect for people who enjoy:
