The world feels particularly exhausting right now, and if you're anything like me, the weight of a million disasters is leaving you with little energy to get through life, let alone read. Novellas have been my saving grace in this terrible fugue state, slicing through my fatigue and finally letting me get back to focusing on bite-sized fictional nightmares instead of the ones happening in real life.

One of the few bright sides of the world feeling like it's completely burning is that it helped me find A Sincere Warning About the Entity in Your Home by Jason Arnopp. The Last Days of Jack Sparks is in my top 10 horror books of all time, so I went in knowing Arnopp could make you laugh one second and then second-guess every noise you heard in your house the next, but I was still genuinely surprised by what he pulls off in such little time. This compact 64-page novella does something completely different new, fun, and unnerving by bringing the terror straight into your own house. Crafted as a letter from a stranger, the unnamed narrator is warning you about a supernatural danger lurking inside your home - one they're all too familiar with because they're the ones responsible for leaving it behind.

The epistolary format creates an immersive experience that makes you question what might be hiding in the shadows of your bedroom. And if you're prone to sleep paralysis, good luck falling asleep at night! Okay, maybe it doesn't reach that level of fright, but it's unique, entertaining, and will leave you feeling like you've stumbled upon something new.
